Best Shopify invoice app for an EU store: six options compared, ours included

Shopify's built-in VAT invoices, Order Printer, Sufio, Order Printer Pro, Vify and InvoiceAnvil compared for a store selling in the EU: automatic invoices, credit notes, e-invoice formats and PEPPOL. Written by the InvoiceAnvil team, said up front.

Who wrote this. This page is written by the team behind InvoiceAnvil, one of the apps compared. We say it at the top rather than at the bottom. The other apps' strengths are written as they are, including where they do better than we do, and we do not rank ourselves first.

The short answer

  • You sell to consumers in the EU or UK, through Shopify checkout: start with Shopify's built-in VAT invoices. Free, nothing to install.
  • You mostly need printed documents (invoices, packing slips, pick lists): Shopify Order Printer, free, if you can edit a Liquid template.
  • You want invoices sent automatically, with templates you design, in any country: Order Printer Pro or Vify Order Printer.
  • You sell B2B across the EU and want the e-invoices sent over PEPPOL for you: Sufio, which submits e-invoices itself.
  • Your business is in France, Belgium or Germany and you want Factur-X / ZUGFeRD and credit notes from the free plan: InvoiceAnvil, ours.

How we compared

One question first: does the app issue invoices, or print them? An issued invoice is created when the order is paid, gets its own number, is kept, and is corrected by a separate document when the order is refunded. A printed invoice is a view of the order, made when you ask for it. Both are useful. Only the first replaces an invoicing process.

Then four criteria that matter to an EU seller: credit notes on refunds, structured e-invoice formats (Factur-X, ZUGFeRD, UBL), sending over PEPPOL, and who the app is made for.

Facts about the other apps come from their Shopify App Store listings, read on 1 October 2026, and from Shopify's help pages for its own tools. We give no competitor's price: they change, and plans differ by volume. Each listing shows its current plans; check them there.

The table

Made for Model Credit notes E-invoice formats Sends over PEPPOL
Shopify built-in VAT invoices EU and UK orders through Shopify checkout Free, in Shopify Not described in Shopify's help Not mentioned (PDF) No
Shopify Order Printer Printing order documents Free app No (refunds show as a total) No (browser PDF) No
Order Printer Pro Printing and sending invoices, any country Free plan, then by volume Listed E-invoicing "add-on available in-app" Peppol add-on listed
Vify Order Printer Printing and sending invoices, any country Free plan, then subscription Listed Peppol, ZUGFeRD, Factur-X listed Not stated (format listed)
Sufio Invoicing, B2B and EU-heavy stores Subscription, free trial Yes, separate from the invoice Peppol, ZUGFeRD, Factur-X Yes, "submit e-invoices"
InvoiceAnvil (ours) Stores established in France, Belgium, Germany Free plan, then $9 or $19/month Yes, on every plan, own series Factur-X / ZUGFeRD in every PDF; UBL on $19 No

"Listed" means the app lists the document type among its features; the listing does not say how it is produced.

The question to ask before choosing

What happens to the invoice when the order changes?

Ask it of any app, ours included, before you install it. Sufio puts it at the top of its own listing: "Most invoicing apps just update the same invoice when your orders are refunded or edited. Sufio creates separate invoices and credit notes." That is the right question. An invoice that silently changes after it was sent is the thing an accountant, or a tax inspector, will not accept. Shopify's own help says its built-in invoices "can't be regenerated after order changes", and Order Printer simply reprints the current order.

Test it on a real order in the trial: issue the invoice, refund one line, and look at what you have afterwards.

The apps, one by one

Shopify's built-in VAT invoices

Switched on in Settings > Taxes and duties, for orders shipped to the EU or the UK. Free, and no app to install. The limits are in Shopify's own help: orders with duties, orders outside Shopify checkout and orders shipping to Portugal get none, and the refund case is thin. Our full guide.

Shopify Order Printer

Shopify's free printing app: invoices, packing slips, pick lists, from templates in HTML, CSS and Liquid. Excellent for paperwork. It prints on demand, keeps no series of its own and sends nothing. What its invoice template leaves out.

Order Printer Pro

Built on the same idea as Order Printer, pushed much further: its listing describes "automatic delivery of PDF invoices, receipts & quotes", bulk printing from the admin, POS and mobile, draft orders, and templates customised by code with support. It lists more than thirty interface languages, and an e-invoicing and Peppol add-on inside the app. Where it beats us: printing, packing slips, quotes, design freedom, and stores in any country.

Vify Order Printer

Also a printer that became an invoicing tool. Its listing describes automatic delivery of PDF invoices, bulk printing, B2B invoices that capture the customer's VAT number, and support for "European e-invoicing standards such as Peppol, ZUGFeRD, and Factur-X". Where it beats us: the same as Order Printer Pro, with e-invoice formats named on the listing, for sellers outside our three countries.

Sufio

The most complete invoicing app of the list for EU and B2B stores. Its listing describes separate invoices and credit notes, documents "translated by local accountants", Shopify B2B automation, invoices customers download from your store, and e-invoices it submits over Peppol, ZUGFeRD and Factur-X. Where it beats us: it sends the e-invoice, not just creates it; it covers far more countries and document types. If you sell B2B across the EU, look at it first.

InvoiceAnvil (ours)

Made for one case: a store whose business is established in France, Belgium or Germany. When an order is paid, it issues an invoice with its own gapless number; when a refund is created, a credit note in a separate series, referencing the invoice. Every PDF embeds Factur-X / ZUGFeRD data (EN 16931), written in the buyer's language (French, English, German or Dutch). Free for 15 invoices a month, credit notes and Factur-X included; $9/month for unlimited invoices and an automatic email to the buyer; $19/month adds UBL for PEPPOL, VIES checks of VAT numbers and a monthly export for your accountant.

What InvoiceAnvil does not do

The section to read before installing it:

  • Only three seller countries. A store established outside France, Belgium or Germany cannot use it. Any of the other apps above will serve you better.
  • It does not transmit. It creates the structured invoice; it does not send it over PEPPOL or through a French platform. Sufio does; Order Printer Pro lists an add-on.
  • It is not a printing tool. No packing slips, no pick lists, no quotes, no draft orders. Keep Order Printer, or choose one of the printer apps.
  • It does not calculate tax. It reads the amounts Shopify calculated.
  • It is young. Fewer features, fewer integrations, and fewer reviews than the others.

Which app for your situation

A small store selling to consumers in the EU or UK. Shopify's built-in VAT invoices. Paying for an app on top would be paying twice, until refunds or B2B customers make the manual work real.

A store that lives on printed paperwork. Shopify Order Printer if you are comfortable with Liquid; Order Printer Pro or Vify if you want a design editor, quotes and automatic emails as well.

A B2B or wholesale store selling across the EU. Sufio. VAT numbers, credit notes and the sending of e-invoices over PEPPOL in one place.

A store outside the EU. None of the EU-specific arguments here apply to you. Choose on templates and automation: Order Printer Pro, Vify, or Shopify Order Printer.

A store established in France, Belgium or Germany that wants issued invoices, credit notes and Factur-X / ZUGFeRD without a large plan. InvoiceAnvil, and keep your access point or platform for the sending.

FAQ

Is Shopify Order Printer enough for EU invoices? It can print most of the content with template work, but it keeps no invoice series of its own, sends nothing and produces no credit notes. Fine for occasional invoices on request.

Do I need an app if Shopify already makes VAT invoices? Not if your orders all qualify and refunds are rare. Check last month's orders: count those with no VAT invoice, and look at what you did on each refund.

Which Shopify invoice apps support Factur-X or ZUGFeRD? Of the apps compared here, Sufio, Vify Order Printer and InvoiceAnvil name these formats on their listings; Order Printer Pro lists an e-invoicing add-on. Shopify's own tools do not mention them.

Does an invoicing app send e-invoices over PEPPOL? Some do: Sufio states it submits them, Order Printer Pro lists a Peppol add-on. InvoiceAnvil does not; it creates the UBL file on its $19 plan, and your access point sends it.
